A personal story of sensitive skin, microbiome science, and the search for balance

Finding the right moisturizer for sensitive skin is rarely straightforward.

For many people, it becomes a cycle—trying product after product, hoping for relief, only to be met with more irritation, dryness, or discomfort. What should feel like care often becomes trial and error.

At Treats Lab, this is something we’ve seen again and again—both through formulation work and in listening to people navigating sensitive skin.

I remember going through this myself—not just as a Creative Director working closely with beauty brands, but as a parent watching my child’s skin react in ways I couldn’t fully control.

Over time, I realized something important:

Sensitive skin doesn’t need more products. It needs the right kind of support.

This realization didn’t come from a lab alone. It came from years of working as a Creative Director supporting beauty and fashion brands, and more personally, from navigating sensitive, eczema-prone skin with my daughter—the kind of experience that reshapes how you think about care entirely.

Why Is It So Difficult to Find the Right Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin?

Most moisturizers are designed to do one thing well—hydrate.

But for sensitive or reactive skin, hydration alone is often not enough.

From what I’ve seen—both professionally and personally—the frustration comes from products that feel right in theory, but don’t account for how reactive skin actually behaves.

When the skin barrier is compromised, even well-intentioned products can feel overwhelming. Ingredients that work for others may trigger redness, dryness, or discomfort.

This is because sensitive skin is not just “dry skin.”

It’s often a reflection of:

  • a weakened barrier
  • increased reactivity
  • an imbalanced skin environment

Without addressing these underlying factors, even the best moisturizer can fall short.

What Makes a Moisturizer “Good” for Sensitive Skin?

The best moisturizer for sensitive skin doesn’t rely on a single ingredient or trend.

Instead, it supports the skin in three essential ways:

1. Barrier Support

The skin barrier helps retain moisture and protect against external stressors.

When it’s supported, the skin becomes less reactive over time.

2. Hydration That Lasts

Hydration should not just sit on the surface—it should help the skin maintain moisture throughout the day.

3. Skin Environment Balance

This includes supporting the skin microbiome—the ecosystem that helps regulate how the skin responds to stress.

In developing formulas, I kept coming back to this idea:

a moisturizer should not just hydrate—it should help the skin function better.

A truly effective sensitive skin moisturizer works with the skin, not against it.

My Journey: From Agency Work to Personal Calling

Before Treats Lab, I spent over a decade helping beauty and fashion brands define who they were.

Branding, at its core, is about identity. It’s the process of taking something abstract—a philosophy, a vision—and making it tangible.

But when I stepped away from agency life, I found myself facing a different challenge:

defining something deeply personal.

I often say that Treats Lab didn’t begin as a brand idea—it began as a question:

why does it feel so hard to find products that truly support sensitive skin?

At the time, I began consulting for indie skincare brands in Korea expanding into the U.S. market. I was inspired by founders who approached skin health with intention and care.

At the same time, I was navigating something much closer to home—my daughter’s sensitive, eczema-prone skin.

And that changed everything.

What Is the Skin Microbiome—and Why Does It Matter?

During this period, I met a professor whose research focused on the skin microbiome.

He introduced me to a way of thinking about skin that felt both new and familiar:

that the skin is not just a surface—it’s an ecosystem.

That idea stayed with me in a very personal way. I had seen how unpredictable sensitive skin could be—and suddenly, it made sense why.

His work explored how plant-based extracts inspired by Korean medicine could influence the skin’s bacterial environment and help support balance in eczema-prone skin.

I began reading research, attending talks, and learning how the microbiome interacts with:

  • inflammation
  • barrier function
  • skin resilience

The more I learned, the more I realized that calming skin isn’t about eliminating reactions—it’s about restoring balance within this ecosystem.

Growing Up Between Two Worlds of Healing

Growing up Korean American, I was exposed to two very different approaches to care.

On one side was Western medicine—focused on treating symptoms directly.

On the other was Korean medicine, or Hanbang—focused on balance, prevention, and harmony within the body.

I didn’t fully understand the contrast growing up—but I felt it.

These perspectives shaped how I began to think about skincare.

What if products didn’t just respond to irritation—but helped prevent it by supporting the skin over time?

What if they worked with the skin, instead of trying to correct it?

What Does It Mean to Design a Moisturizer That Works With the Skin?

As I began developing formulas, I realized the challenge wasn’t just technical—it was philosophical.

I wasn’t trying to create just another moisturizer.

I was trying to create something I had been searching for—something I felt was missing.

A product that:

  • supports the skin barrier
  • maintains hydration
  • respects the skin’s natural ecosystem

At the same time, I was building a brand.

And that process—more than anything—required reflection.

Clarity came when I stopped asking “what should this be?” and started asking “who is this for?”

Why Do Most Moisturizers Fall Short for Sensitive Skin?

Many moisturizers are either:

  • too basic to support long-term skin health, or
  • too active, overwhelming already sensitive skin

This creates a difficult trade off:

  • gentle, but ineffective
  • effective, but irritating

From what I’ve seen, this is where trust in skincare breaks down—when products promise comfort but deliver unpredictability.

Sensitive skin shouldn’t have to choose between comfort and results.

The issue is not just ingredients—it’s how those ingredients are combined.

What Does a Barrier-First, Microbiome-Support Formula Look Like?

This is where the philosophy behind Treats Lab began to take shape.

Instead of focusing on single ingredients, the approach became:

support the skin from multiple directions at once.

The ABC Microbiome Calming Lotion was developed with this in mind.

Its formulation centers around:

  • microbiome-support ingredients
  • barrier-support lipids
  • hydration systems

At the core is Bi-Om Complex™, inspired by traditional Korean botanicals.

From a formulation perspective, I wasn’t trying to create something that worked quickly—I was trying to create something that worked consistently.

Rather than forcing change, the goal is to create conditions where the skin can feel calmer, more balanced, and more resilient over time.

How Do You Choose the Right Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin?

If you’re searching for a face moisturizer for sensitive skin, it can help to simplify your approach.

One of the biggest patterns I’ve noticed is that people often do too much when their skin needs less.

Look for products that:

  • support the skin barrier
  • provide lasting hydration
  • are designed for sensitive or reactive skin

Avoid:

  • overly harsh actives
  • heavily fragranced formulas
  • complex routines

In many cases, consistency matters more than complexity.

How Treats Lab Approaches Sensitive Skin Care

At Treats Lab, everything comes back to one idea:

balance brings calm.

The products were designed not as standalone solutions, but as a system:

Together, they reflect a philosophy shaped by:

  • modern microbiome research
  • traditional Korean medicine
  • lived experience

From the beginning, my goal was not to create something that “fixes” the skin.

It was to create something that supports it—consistently, gently, and over time.

FAQ: Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin

What is the best moisturizer for sensitive skin?

The best moisturizer for sensitive skin is one that supports the skin barrier, maintains hydration, and minimizes the risk of irritation. Rather than focusing on a single “hero ingredient,” the most effective moisturizers are designed as balanced systems that address multiple aspects of skin health at once.

Sensitive skin is often not just dry—it is reactive, which means the barrier is more easily disrupted and the skin is more prone to redness, discomfort, or irritation. Because of this, a good moisturizer should include barrier-support ingredients such as ceramides, along with hydration-support ingredients like humectants and soothing botanicals.

Equally important is what the formula avoids. Products that are heavily fragranced, overly active, or overly complex can overwhelm sensitive skin and increase reactivity.

From a formulation perspective, the goal is not to “fix” the skin quickly, but to support it consistently. Over time, this allows the skin to become more stable and less reactive. This is why simple, barrier-focused moisturizers often outperform trend-driven or highly active formulas when it comes to sensitive skin.

What ingredients should I look for in a sensitive skin moisturizer?

When choosing a moisturizer for sensitive skin, it’s important to focus on ingredients that support the skin barrier, maintain hydration, and help calm visible irritation.

Ceramides are one of the most important ingredients to look for, as they help reinforce the skin’s protective barrier and reduce moisture loss. Amino acids and peptides can help support the skin’s structure and resilience, while soothing botanicals—such as centella asiatica—help calm the appearance of redness and irritation.

Hydrating ingredients like beta glucan or glycerin also play a key role, as dehydration can make sensitive skin more reactive. In addition, microbiome-support ingredients are becoming increasingly important, as they help maintain balance in the skin’s ecosystem and reduce how easily irritation is triggered.

Rather than focusing on a single ingredient, the most effective approach is to choose formulas that combine these elements in a balanced way. This allows the moisturizer to support the skin from multiple directions, helping it feel more comfortable and stable over time.

Can moisturizer help reduce redness?

A well-formulated moisturizer can help reduce the appearance of redness by supporting the underlying causes of skin sensitivity. Redness is often linked to barrier disruption, dehydration, or environmental stress, rather than a single isolated issue.

By reinforcing the skin barrier, moisturizers help prevent moisture loss and protect against irritants. Hydration helps improve overall skin comfort, while soothing ingredients help calm visible irritation.

It’s important to understand that moisturizers do not eliminate inflammation entirely. Instead, they help create conditions where the skin can regulate itself more effectively. Over time, this can lead to a noticeable reduction in redness and sensitivity.

Consistency is key. Using a gentle, supportive moisturizer regularly—rather than switching products frequently—allows the skin to stabilize and become less reactive. This is why barrier-first routines are often recommended for people with sensitive or easily irritated skin.

How often should I moisturize sensitive skin?

Most people with sensitive skin benefit from moisturizing at least once or twice daily, typically after cleansing when the skin is most receptive to hydration. Applying moisturizer consistently helps maintain the skin barrier and prevent moisture loss throughout the day.

For sensitive or reactive skin, consistency is more important than frequency. A simple routine followed daily is often more effective than using multiple products inconsistently.

In some cases, additional hydration layers—such as mists or lightweight serums—can be used throughout the day if the skin feels dry or tight. However, it’s important to avoid over-layering too many products, as this can sometimes overwhelm sensitive skin.

The goal is to maintain a steady level of hydration and support the barrier, rather than constantly adjusting the routine. Over time, this consistency helps the skin feel more stable, comfortable, and resilient.

Why does sensitive skin react to so many moisturizers?

Sensitive skin often reacts to moisturizers because the skin barrier is compromised and more easily affected by external factors. When the barrier is weakened, ingredients that might normally be well tolerated can penetrate more deeply and trigger irritation.

In addition, sensitive skin is often linked to an imbalance in the skin’s environment, including the microbiome. When this balance is disrupted, the skin becomes more reactive and less predictable.

Another common factor is the use of overly complex or highly active formulas. Products that contain strong actives, heavy fragrance, or too many ingredients can overwhelm sensitive skin and increase the likelihood of reactions.

From both a formulation and user perspective, the solution is usually not to add more products, but to simplify. Choosing gentle, barrier-supportive formulas and maintaining a consistent routine allows the skin to stabilize over time.

Calm Skin Is Built Over Time

Looking back, creating a moisturizer for sensitive skin was never just about formulation.

It was about understanding something deeper:

that skin doesn’t need to be fixed—it needs to be supported.

And for me, that understanding didn’t come all at once—it came through years of trial, reflection, and learning how to listen to what the skin is actually asking for.

When the barrier is strengthened, hydration is maintained, and the skin’s natural ecosystem is respected, something shifts.

Not instantly. Not dramatically.

But steadily.

And over time, that steady support is what allows skin to feel calm again.
